| Collection within the 1/2 pass (4th Apr 08 at 4:27am UTC) | | I like to mix things up when riding and rarely do a full H/P from one end of the arena to the other.
My favorite is H/P to 1/4 pirouette to L/Y then straight. I will mix up any of the above in any order. I pretty much have my horse able to respond to any tiny imperdeptions of requests. the half halt, well I require very little so use it when necessary. I am very big on the use of turns to collect the horse more naturally ( meaning using the horse's need to re balance himself..thus collect, to make a turn without falling in or out
What does anyone else do to maintain activity balance and colection within the half pass?

| Foaling, when do you assist. (4th Apr 08 at 3:59am UTC) | | I watch mare stare and most people at some point assist the mare in the foaling process. Is this the norm all the time or should the person let the mare do it all alone and assist only if there are problems? | |

| Involved with horses. (4th Apr 08 at 3:55am UTC) | | Obviously if you post on horse boards you are probably involved in some way with horses. So Why? Here are some obvious reasons.
* people like to ride * people like to compete * people like the animals, but love the social aspects and camaraderie of their follow riders * it's their business (I mean their actual business, not 'it's none of yo' bidness')
So, why do you have horses?

| Prince Charles and the hooker. (3rd Apr 08 at 3:36am UTC) | | Prince Charles decided to take up jogging.
Every day, he'd jog past a hooker standing on the same street corner. He learned to brace himself as he approached her for what was almost certain to follow.
"One hundred and fifty pounds!" she'd shout from the curb.
"No! Five pounds!" He would fire back, just to shut her up.
This ritual between him and the hooker became a daily occurrence. He'd run by and she'd yell, "One hundred and fifty pounds!" He'd yell back, "Five pounds!"
One day, Camilla decided that she wanted to accompany her husband on his jog.
As the jogging couple neared the working woman's street corner, Prince Charles realised she'd bark her 150 offer and Camilla would wonder what he'd really been doing on all his past outings. He figured he'd better have a good explanation for his wife.
As they jogged into the turn that would take them past the corner, he became even more apprehensive than usual. Sure enough, there was the hooker. He tried to avoid her eyes as she watched the pair jog past.
Then, from her corner, the hooker yelled, "See what you get for five pounds, you tight bastard?!"

| The "short" course vs the old style long course. (2nd Apr 08 at 3:03am UTC) | | I just breeze through this discipline being more interested in the dressage portion but lately with some of the recent accidents and horse deaths many are blaming it on the change in the manner it is being run and the new rules.
Can anyone explain just exactly what changed from the old to the new. What was taken out or added?

| Speed in Hunter Classes (2nd Apr 08 at 2:59am UTC) | | Not being a hunter person I have always thought that judges pin the slow steady hunters. A friend of mine said that is not always true and that judges like to see the horse moving at a decent clip.
Any comments on this? | |

| Improper triming causes founder. (1st Apr 08 at 3:56am UTC) | | Having a horse that has good feet is wonderful, but it does cause you as the owner to not realize certain fundamentals that other take for granted.
I was asked recently if an improper trim can cause a horse to founder. I am talking about a bare footed horse not a shod one..
My first answer would be no but I am now second guessing myself so the answer is ??

| Response vs Movement (1st Apr 08 at 12:30am UTC) | | The horse will not respond quick or proper until the rider has set the horse up in a balanced and engaged manner, this is movement. There can be no response good enough for the horse to be able react physically correct without the quality of movement being there.
Yes you can get some semblence of responce in a shoulder in with dragging legs and call that responce. There are many that train this way. Then there are the purests that insist in a pure forward movement correct in every way before they ask for the tinniest of baby step of a shoulder in.
For instance, if the horse is not in front of your leg, he can't respond as quickly or effectively. Being behind the leg and therefore not engaged cannot result in quality movement, and therefore response.
So it makes no sense for example in asking for leg yield if you don't have a relaxed, balanced and forward horse, that is rythymic and supple. So, you need quality of movement BEFORE asking for lateral work.
In summary: If the response is there, the movement will be there. And, if the movement is there, the response will be there.
